Early Settler Families

The founding families of Grimsby, including Nelles, Bowslaugh, Kitchen, Woolverton, Pettit, Lewis, Moore, Nixon, Beamer, Carpenter, Chambers, Lawrason, Smith, Wilcox, and Richardson, were early loyalist settlers who played pivotal roles in shaping the community. These families immigrated to Upper Canada from the Mohawk Valley in New York State and New Jersey, with ties to the Revolutionary War and strong contributions to agricultural, governmental, and religious developments in Grimsby. Their legacies include significant land grants, establishment of township institutions, and influential roles in early Grimsby society.
